Research focus
Main research area is capital market-based accounting research, predominantly in an international context, particularly in South-East Asia and Europe.
The other field of interest is international accounting, with particular reference to developing countries. This has involved many publications and extensive study tours, research and consultancy in a wide range of countries, including South East Asia, South America, Africa, USA, Australia, the South Pacific and many European countries.
Has published extensively in academic and professional journals and is the author of several books, including "The Stock Exchange and Investment Analysis" and "An Introduction to Accounting and Finance".
Other activities
Editor of Journal of Business Finance and Accounting 1979-2004 and currently joint editor of Research in Accounting in Emerging Economies. Has been an associate editor of the British Accounting Review and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Accounting Research, Applied Financial Economics and Financial Accountability and Management.

Spent 6 years as head of Maths and Science Department at Methodist High School, Freetown, Sierra Leone followed by as an Educational advisor in Sharjah, UAE. Currently acting as consultant to two holiday companies, with particular responsibility for internet advertising including web page design and booking systems. Also involved in developing a range of holiday packages targeted at specific markets.
Involved in advising independent travel company on their choice and use of computer technology. In the course of these roles I spend time within the companies environment observing how the staff operate on a daily basis and their reaction to the demands and needs of their respective roles. To achieve this involves me spending time in the high street situation and also Gatwick Airport.

A practicing management consultant, specialising in management development. He works as a trainer, facilitator and coach in a wide variety of organisations. In 2007, these have included Barclays, Gala Coral, BAe Systems, Babcock International, Rockware Glass, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Wandsworth Borough Council, and the National Probation Service. The main focus of his assignments has been on leadership and change management, team development, management and organisational development, and executive coaching.
Alan is an associate of a number of universities and teaches on a part-time basis. This includes undergraduate, postgraduate level and corporate programmes for Hull, Loughborough,
Nottingham Trent and Anglia Ruskin universities, and on professional qualifications for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). He is a Visiting Fellow of Ashcroft International Business School, Anglia Ruskin University, and a teaching associate of the National School of Government.
